VERNON — Stephanie Peterson signed a letter of intent and committed to attend and play Division I lacrosse for the Wagner Seahawks in Staten Island, N.Y.

“Wagner College was a great fit for me both academically and athletically," said Peterson, a senior captain and midfielder for the Vernon Vikings lacrosse team. "I wanted a smaller college while still being near the action of a big city. Playing lacrosse for the Seahawks will be a great challenge and experience.”

Her former Vernon teammate Jess Mills also attends Wagner and the two will pair up once again.

Stephanie reached her career winning 100th goal early in the season while up against Ramapo High School. She racked up 87 additional goals in her senior year alone, tying her at fourth in the state.

Vernon’s lacrosse coach Steve Carlson had this to say about her: “Steph Peterson is unbelievable, one of the fiercest scorers in the state. She’s cool and in control when she has the ball, she protects it well. She doesn’t force the ball and waits for opportunities and when she gets an opportunity look out because she shoots it hard as well.”

Stephanie started playing soccer at the age of 5, and quickly found out her competitive nature was very strong. She continued to play soccer through eighth grade while also trying her hand at field hockey, a sport which soon replaced her passion for soccer. She went out for the lacrosse team the spring of her freshman year and fell in love with the sport immediately. She started on the JV squad and earned a few shots on varsity. In her sophomore year Stephanie started for the Varsity team as an attack. She played as a mid-fielder in her junior and senior years. She enjoyed an undefeated season with the 2011 Vikings lacrosse team.

She was named captain of the field hockey and lacrosse teams during her senior year at Vernon High School.

Her accomplishments include:
All-League 1st Team, Lacrosse 2012

Fourth leading scorer in the state of NJ 2012

All Area 2nd Team, Field Hockey 2011

All Conference 2nd Team, Field Hockey 2011

All Conference, Honorable Mention 2011

NJH All Area 1st Team, Lacrosse 2011

All Conference, 2nd Team 2010
HSW Lacrosse Tournament Champs 2011

When she is not competing on the field Stephanie has many other hobbies and interests. She spent 11 years as a Girl Scout with Troop 100 but her commitment to sports took over and she was unable to continue during her high school years. She has played violin since third grade and was a part of the Vernon Orchestra throughout high school. She was inducted into the Tri-M Honor Society in her junior year and was a part of the Vernon Chamber group for the past three years and was the first chair in the high school’s orchestra this year.

At Wagner, Stephanie plans to study accounting and wants to eventually earn her CPA.

“I am very excited about moving on to Wagner but I will certainly miss all the great friends and memories that I have made throughout my high school experience,” she said.
