VERNON — Karate students from throughout the area met to demonstrate their martial arts skills at the annual Vernon Valley Karate Academy PAL benefit karate tournament, held at Maple Grange Park during Vernon Day celebrations in early June.

Participants ranging in age from 4 to 16 competed in three different karate disciplines: Kata, the performance of prearranged karate techniques; Kumite, sparring between two students in which points are awarded for effective and controlled punches and kicks, and Kobudo, arrangements of fighting moves using traditional Okinawan weapons.

“Every year we see the caliber of the student performance getting better and better," said Sensei Tom Shull, of Vernon Valley Karate Acdemy. "It is a tribute to the quality of the families of these students, for such polite and focused children reflect the values of their parents.”

Shull believes that karate helps to promote positive values. “At a time when it seems the norm is to hear stories of disaffected children, gangs and drugs, it is heartening to witness crowds of spirited children and proud parents sharing in such a positive activity.”

Every year the Vernon Valley Karate Academy raises funds to benefit the local Police Athletic League. This year the school, along with the continued support of many local businesses and residents, was able to generate close to $3,500 to help the PAL, which supports local children with programs all year long.

Vernon Valley karate will offer and introductory karate program this summer and fall through the PAL. Contact the Vernon Valley Karate Academy at 973-764-3104 or www.vernonkarate.com for more information.
