NEWTON — Sussex County Community College's Thursdays on the Green series featured The Ain't Broke Band opening for Eight Days of Blues. Following last week's near record crowd of 840 Americana roots and folk fans, almost 300 Rock'n Blues fans staked out spots on the Connor Green Thursday night.

The drop in attendance compared to last week was no surprise to Bryan Zellmer, program director for the summer series. He explained the smaller crowd was due to music fans having other commitments around the Independence Day holiday.

“We are thankful for the weather, summer temperatures with low humidity," said Zellmer. "I hope for weather like this the rest of the season.”

The Ain't Broke Band duo of Paul Evans Mitchell, of Glen Spey, N.Y., and Obi Kaye of Milford, Pa., has been together for two years. Mitchell said it is “really a pleasure” to perform at the college.

The six-member Eight Days of Blues band of Lance Casper of Montague, Kevin Hadley of Wantage, Mary Jasch of Frankford, Don Sandberg of Vernon, Joe Bartos of Moscow, Pa., and Julian Sparacino of Scranton, Pa., closed out the night.

Attendees looking for something more than the music wandered back to Erica Alcock of Newton and her pile of loaner hula hoops. Anyone could pick up a hoop and perform or at least attempt to perform. Explaining her motivation for supplying hoops to strangers Alcock said “hula hoops make people smile."
