VERNON — Two upcoming free events sponsored by The Vernon Coalition offer entertainment and education for area young people.
On Monday, July 30, from noon to 3 p.m., the Coalition is holding a Youth Advocacy Training session at The Appalachian Hotel at Mountain Creek Resort.
Open to anyone from age 12 to 18, the program is a chance for young people to learn how to "develop, create and successfully advocate for change: A useful skill for all life endeavors," according to organizers.
The program will be given by Angela Conover, media, marketing and community relations director of Partnership for a Drug Free NJ.
In addition, those attending will get lunch and receive discount coupons for Mountain Creek Waterpark.
For information, call 973-383-4787, visit www.centerforprevention.org or e-mail The Vernon Coalition at annmarie@centerforprevention.org or gemma@centerforprevention.org.

On Tuesday, Aug. 7, Vernon will once again host National Night Out. The program runs from 7 to 9 p.m. at Maple Grange Park and is one of numerous such celebrations held nationwide and in Canada that occurs on the first Tuesday of August.

The party puts the focus on preventing crime and drug activity by getting people to know their neighbors.
There will be free food and drinks, games, music, a giant double slide and an outdoor movie, "We Bought a Zoo," which will be shown at 9 p.m. Stay and see the film; bring a blanket or chair.
The free event is also sponsored by The Vernon Coalition, as well as Vernon Township, Vernon PAL, the Sussex County Sheriff's Crime Stoppers, Vernon Police and Vernon Township Municipal Alliance Committee.
