Mining talks planned for summer

    Ron Mishkin will talk about the history of mining at the Sterling Hil Mining Museum, 30 Plant St., Ogdensburg on July 12 and Aug. 16.

    The talks will be from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and attendees are asked to arrive at the gift shop at 8:45 a.m.

    Mishkin will present the role of mining throughout history and today with emphasis on the 300-year history of mining in New Jersey. The class is eligible for professional development credit.

    How ore bodies were discovered and developed, how mining towns grew, key inventions, evolution of mining methods and technology, differences between coal and metal mines, environmental hazards, silicosis and black lung disease and accident statistics. The history of iron, zinc, and copper mines in New Jersey will be addressed.

    Ore specimens from New Jersey and other mines will be available for examination.
