Gallery 23 featuring two artists in May
BLAIRSTOWN — Judith Musicant and Catherine Marchant are Artists of the Month Gallery 23. Their work will be featured throughout May in the windows of the gallery.
Judith Musicant
Musicant, a resident of Mountainside, creates functional stoneware pottery. From her first touch of clay in 1978, she discovered a passion for making pottery that has never abated.
Musicant creates pottery to drink from, pour from, bake with, eat from, and make a part of everyday life. She works primarily on the potter’s wheel, but because clay is so plastic, she finds it almost impossible to throw a symmetrical object and leave it at that. She is forever poking, pulling, prodding, cutting or otherwise altering the thrown pot in some fashion, which is what creates a body of work that reflects her vision of art for everyday life.
Her work has been shown in juried exhibits at Peters Valley Crafts Center, Morristown Unitarian Fellowship Crafts Exhibition and the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts. Her work was included in 500 Pitchers: Contemporary Expressions of a Classic Form, published by Lark, and also in Ceramics Review, a British journal of ceramic arts.
Catherine Marchant
Marchant, a resident of Westfield, specializes in one-of-a-kind, hand woven and knitted clothing, woven table linens, and beaded jewelry. “I love working with color. I like to combine colors in unexpected ways,” said Marchant, who teaches knitting at the Arts Workshop at the Newark Museum.
Gallery 23, an artist co-op, is located at 23 Main Street, Blairstown. The hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 4 p.m.
