Mining history class planned in Ogdensburga

OGDENSBURG — Former miner and geologist Ron Mishkin will give a class on the 300-year history of mining in New Jersey at the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, 30 Plant St., in Ogdensburg on Saturday, March 15.

Mishkin will discuss how ore bodies were discovered and developed, how mining towns grew, key inventions, the evolution of mining methods and technology, differences between coal and metal mines, environmental hazards, silicosis and black lung disease, accident statistics and more. The innovative Edison Iron mine on Sparta Mountain will be described. The history of iron, zinc, and copper mines in New Jersey will be addressed, the importance of Cornish miners and engineers to mining worldwide. Attendees will hear Mishkin's experience in four mines and will be able to examine ore speciiments.

The fee will be $15 for adults and $10 for seniors age 60 and older. Payment must be made upon arrival. Complimentary light refreshments will be available.
