Children’s Specialized Hospital hosts Annual Autism Symposium
EDISON — Children’s Specialized Hospital presents the Autism Symposium on May 30, from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pines Manor, which is located at 2085 State Rte. 27 in Edison.
Participants will learn useful approaches and tips to help people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in their daily lives. By the end of the symposium, one will understand parents’ perspectives of having kids with ASD, learn how to effectively handle challenges often faced by people with ASD, learn effective educational and other forms of advocacy, and strategies for meaningful recreational activities, dating and parenting. The Autism Symposium is for health care providers, mental health professionals, adults with ASD, parents/caregivers, school personnel, therapists and other professionals interested in autism.

Steven Shore, author and president emeritus of the Asperger’s Association of New England, will be speaking. Shore was diagnosed with autism at a young age and was nonverbal until age 4. Today, he is recognized nationally as a dynamic speaker, and powerful advocate for bettering the quality of life of people affected by ASD.
Other speakers will include Amy Mansue, president and CEO of Children’s Specialized Hospital; Amy Smith, information services director for Autism New Jersey; Susan Mendelson, MSW, LSW and director for Social Skills for Children; and Jeffrey Cohen, a well known author.
Additional experts in autism treatment and education will be speaking. The panel of recreation professionals will include Leslie Fanelli, Kaylee McGuire, Mickey McNany and Dina Trunzo. The parent panel of speakers will include Evelyn Delgado, Beth Giannobile, Tom Newbon and Kelly and Mike Sampson.
This course is offered for 0.55 ASHA CEUS (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association). It is offered at the intermediate or professional level. If participants are present for the entire program they will have the opportunity to be recommended to receive the credit. For educators and other professionals, a certificate for professional development will be offered.
