April 26 is National Rx Drug Takeback Day

There are seven locations throughout Sussex County open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week for people to dispose of medication.

They can be dropped off at the Hopatcong Police Dept., the state police barracks in Augusta, the Newton Police Dept., Sparta Police Dept., Vernon Police Dept., Hardyston Police Dept. and Andover Police Dept., which have permanent receptacles in the lobbies in which to dispose of medications. On Saturday, April 26, the Hamburg, Ogdensburg police departments and the Byram ShopRite will host collection sites from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.\

National Take-Back Day is sponsored by the New Jersey Division of the Drug Enforcement Administration and every one of these disposal opportunities are free and anonymous-no questions asked. Please do not bring liquids, needles or sharps.

Last October, Americans turned in 324 tons of prescription drugs at over 4,114 sites operated by the DEA and its thousands of state and local law enforcement partners. When those results are combined with what was collected in its seven previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in over 3.4 million pounds — more than 1,700 tons—of pills.
