More than 50 young athletes participated in the Sussex County YMCA’s Second Annual Kids’ Mini Triathlon Sunday morning as they swam, biked and ran at the facility.

These young athletes had a chance to experience the competition, learn about sportsmanship, and demonstrate their skills.

“It was great to see siblings, parents, grandparents and friends come together and cheer the children on,” said Debbie Soutter, marketing director of the Sussex County YMCA. "Participation in the event increased over last year’s inaugural race to become an event that the Y will plan to host annually."

Children who participated in this event were grouped by age. Boys and girls ages 4-6 swam 25 yards, biked ½ mile, and ran ¼ mile, ages 7-8 swam 25 yards, biked one mile and ran ½ mile, ages 9-10 swam 50 yards, biked 2 miles and ran ½ mile, ages 11-12 swam 75 yards, biked 2 miles and ran 1 mile, ages 13-14 swam 100 yards, biked 2 miles and ran 1½ miles.

“It’s all about promoting a healthy environment and healthy living, encouraging families to get together and encourage each other,” YMCA Executive Director Jennifer Gardner said. "Offering a kids mini triathlon in the community is one of the many events we host that encourages healthy living.”
