Gene Mulvihill Memorial Golf Tournament raises money for local youth

HAMBURG — Two local students were recently named recipients of the Eugene Mulvihill Memorial Scholarship, created to honor the legacy of Gene Mulvihill, the late owner and visionary of Crystal Springs Resort.

Mulvihill, who died on Oct. 27, 2012, is still remembered for his accomplishments and impact within the community and among the many lives he enriched and inspired. To commemorate Mulvihill’s legacy of providing opportunities to others, the U.S. Freedom Charitable Trust was created to provide financial support to the youth of Sussex County by granting scholarships to local students and aspiring Crystal Springs or Mountain Creek employees.

The inaugural fundraising event, the first annual Gene Mulvihill Memorial Golf Tournament, raised enough money to grant two scholarships to high school seniors and resort employees recognized for their commitment to excellence, entrepreneurship and contribution to the community.

The two recipients were Christiane Lowcher, of Hamburg, and William VanDyke, of Highland Lakes. Both students attended Pope John XXIII Regional High School and plan to continue their education at four-year universities.

Lowcher is currently employed at Ballyowen Golf Club as a cart yard attendant. In addition to her impressive grades, Lowcher is an active member of the community. She was a captain on the varsity golf team, volunteered for the Valerie Fund Organization, earned the Girl Scout Gold Award and was involved with a variety of school clubs. She will be attending Marywood University in Scranton, Pa. this fall with a major in Criminal Justice.

William VanDyke, an employee of Mountain Creek, prides himself on working hard and following through on his goals. He was an athlete for the lacrosse and wrestling teams where he was awarded 2nd Team All Division, 1st Team All Conference and 1st Team All Herald in addition to the Spirit and Coach’s Awards. He also volunteers at MARA Physiotherapy Associates, Highland Lakes EMS and Pope John’s Lacrosse Camp. VanDyke earned an academic scholarship to Arcadia University in Glenside, PA where he will study Biology and Physical Therapy.

The second annual Gene Mulvihill Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for Oct. 1, 2014 at Mulvihill’s beloved Ballyowen Golf Club. The event will consist of a fun and good-natured competitive golf outing followed by an evening of cuisine, camaraderie and storytelling.
