Mining talk planned at musueum

    Ron Mishkin will give a talk at the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, located at 30 Plant St., in Ogdensburg on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

    Attendees are asked to arrive at the gift shop at 8:45 a.m.

    Mishkin, on staff at Sterling Hill Mining Museum, will present the role of mining throughout history and today with emphasis on the 300-year history of mining in New Jersey. The class is eligible for professional development credit. All facets of H-STEAM will be provided to give educators the background of mines in America.

    The subjects will be jow ore bodies were discovered and developed, how mining towns grew, key inventions, evolution of mining methods and technology, differences between coal and metal mines, environmental hazards, silicosis and black lung disease and accident statistics. The history of iron, zinc, and copper mines in New Jersey will be addressed.

    Mishkin will talk about his personal experience in four mines. Ore specimens from New Jersey and other mines will be available for examination.

    Fees will be $15 for adults and $10 for seniors ages 60 and older. Pay upon arrival.
