    David Stephens, 88 years old, died after a short illness peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. Born to David and Minnie Stephens at home in Wharton, N.J., he lived in Wharton before moving to the Stockholm section of Hardyston Twp., N.J., in 1963.

    David served with the United States Marine Corps during WWII landing on Iwo Jima with the 4th Division, 6th War Dog Platoon and then worked with Picatinny Arsenal for many years before retiring Oct. 3, 1986. He was a graduate of Wharton High School in 1943 and captain and guard for the East Dover Field Club Football Team in 1942. He had served as a councilman and acting mayor in Wharton and was an exempt member of the Wharton Fire Department. He also served with the Hardyston Township Planning and Zoning Board.

    David was predeceased by his wife, Florence E. Stephens (2014) and was the devoted father of Susan Stephens and her fiancée, John Tunis of McAfee, N.J. Loving grandfather of Jaclyn Tassey of McAfee, N.J. Dear brother in law of Carol Jewett of Swanton, Vt. Uncle of Corey Jewett of Hawthorne, N.J., and Jeff Jewett of Swanton, Vt.. Grand uncle of Ali Jewett.

    The family will receive their friends at F. John Ramsey Funeral Home, 1 Main St., Franklin, N.J., on Friday, October 24, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
