Security upgrades to the front entrance of the Ogdensburg Borough School could cost the district about $59,000.

George Azrak, Jr,, the architect hired by the Board of Education, gave a presentation of his research on the “Breezeway Security Project,” planned security renovations to the school's main entrance at a cost of about $59,000.

At last month’s Board of Education meeting, Azrak exhibited blueprints pertaining to two different options for the main entrance update. Azrak said one possibility was to take off the aluminum and glass from the front entrance, and replace it with 3 feet of brick. In addition to this, Azrak said that the double doors can be replaced by fireproof doors.

As discussed in January, the security window will be placed outside the entrance to the school. In order to gain access, the visitor will have to announce themselves to the front office. If the visitor is allowed to enter, they will be buzzed in by a security button.

Azrak indicated that the windows can be reinforced. The goal is to create a front facade that would discourage any act of violence.

School board President Paul Worthington asked Azrak what can be done to make class rooms more secure.

Azrak said each window can have a special coating to keep them from shattering. In each classroom, the windows closest to the ground will be first priority to be renovated. school board's goal is to eventually secure each entrance and classroom.

Interim Superintendent/Principal Ernest Palestis said the plan will be completed over a five-year period. Palestis discussed the project with the Ogdensburg Police Dept., which supported the project. Palestis said he would like some of the school board members, some staff, and some of the community to get involved in the project.

The progress on the “Breezeway Security Project” will be discussed at the next Ogdensburg Board of Education meeting.
