School association treasurer charged in theft
FRANKLIN — The treasurer of the Franklin Home & School Association faces theft charges after Franklin Borough police received a report of theft and fraudulent activity from the association.
Maria D. Batista, 40, of Franklin was charged with one count of theft and one count of fraudulent use of a credit card.
Police allege that Batista used checks to pay for personal sundries, food, home goods, fule and legal expenses for other family members. She also is alleged to have used a debit/credit card associated with the Franklin Home and School Association for personal use since July 2014.
Police said the association lost more than $8,000.
She was released pending a court appearance in Sussex County Superior Court.
Police said the investigation is still active as more information is received and the bank accounts of Franklin Home & School Association are further analyzed.
