Winning big

Winning $1,000 for Vera Torres couldn’t come at a better time. With both Vera and her husband Freddy being retired a few extra bucks from Straus News’ I Love New York contest will definitely go a long way.

“I was surprised, totally surprised,” Torres said of winning the contest.

The I Love New York contest asked readers to identify a New York location from a snapshot. Torres was able to properly locate Hyde Park from the clue.

Torres, who lives in Dingmans Ferry, Pa. is right on the border of New York state and said it was easy to identify the location.

“Let me tell you, this couldn’t come at a better time,” Torres said. “Prices are going up and everyone needs a little extra.”

“I wish I could spend it on a luxurious holiday but I will use it to pay bills,” Torres said.

Torres, a former customer service representative at a grocery story and her husband Freddy, a former machine operator are both recently retired.

The couple has been married for more than 44 years and has been living in Dingmans Ferry for 27 years.
