Hamburg struggles to keep up with winter

As more snow approaches the biggest concern for Hamburg and surrounding areas are dwindling salt supplies and the continuing clean up.

"These last two storms have been record breakers.", Councilman Mark Sena said. "Winter hopefully almost over."

According to Sena, the state has placed a hold on the amount of salt that can be delivered to municipalities. Salt deliveries are being prioritized by state to county and then to municipalities. The borough ordered more than 100 tons for the impending snow. However, due to delivery issues the state reduced that amount to 25 to 50 tons.

"We have 25 tons on hand, enough for the next two storms, but, we've had equipment issues.", Sena said.

The borough was expected to have 1 to 2 truck loads delivered.

"Everyone in Sussex County is hurting (for salt) right now," Councilman Ron Garrett said.

According to CouncilmanDaniel Barr, the reason for the delivery issues is the salt is produced in Greece and must come through Staten Island before being distributed.

With the impending storms the Borough Council also wanted to remind residents and businesses that they are responsible for shoveling walkways.

"People are responsible for shoveling snow in front of their homes and businesses. It is a safety issue," Sena said. "We suggest that if someone isn't (clearing snow) that needs to be reported."
