Cleaning up the community

Approximately 800 students, teachers, and volunteers helped clean the banks and waters of the Mustconetong River and the trails of the Morris Canal Greenway last week.

The Sussex County Health Department donated bags and gloves for the cleanup and First Energy Foundation supported the event with a cash donation.

“Clean Communities is not just about litter, it’s about working as a team to make the planet better. Congratulations to Sussex County for hosting what will be the best environmental student exchange yet,” said Sandy Huber, NJCCC executive director.

The main event, showcasing massive litter clean-ups was held at Waterloo Village in Stanhope.

Students learned how the Lenape Indians provided for their own clean communities.

All participants gained a comprehensive view of the history and evolution of environmental issues in New Jersey, while sharing in discussions to address environmental problems. The focus was land use, transportation, and community development, as participants create new and more innovative solutions to environmental problems.
