Hamburg introduces 'tight' budget

The Hamburg Borough Council unveiled its budget on March 16 to the public.

The 2015 spending plan calls for a a $40,496 increase in the tax levy. The average homeowner in the borough is expected to pay about $26 more than last year. The average home in Hamburg is assessed at $151,700.

"We are in very solid shape," said William Schroeder of Nisivoccia LLP, who presented the budget with Chief Financial Officer Amy Maronpot.

Department heads representing the Fire Department, Emergency Medical Service and the Road Department presented their budgets to the council. The Fire Dept. requested a small increase in their budget for 2015 with EMS and Road Department requesting equipment upgrades.

“We have a very tight budget, we would greatly appreciate an increase in our budget this year.” Fire Chief Bill Oller said.

All three departments are experiencing equipment necessities the Borough Council would like to incorporate into their expenditures.

“We need to come up with a plan for capital improvement,” said Councilman Mark Sena.

“The council did a great job.” Marino said. “Our budget discussions make a lot of sense.

A public hearing and expected vote are planned for May 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building.
