Becky Turro, a senior at High Point Regional High School, on March 21, played at the Scholarship Recital of the North Jersey Piano Teachers Association at the Reformed Baptist Church of Lafayette.

A number of local students also played their piano pieces, and Becky was awarded a generous scholarship.

Turro plans to study Music Education and Music Composition at Rutgers University. She has devoted much of her time and energy towards achieving excellence in piano performance and composition. At the Scholarship Recital, Turro played Bach's Prelude and Fugue in C sharp major, the first movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata in F Major, and one of her compositions for piano, "Remnants of a Supernova." "Remnants" is about the dying of a star and the violent process of a new's star's rerbirth. After a peaceful, yet murky beginning, the music becomes more and more agitated, finally exploding into exciting colors and then settling into a clear, calm beauty.

Dori Martin, Turro's piano teacher said she is extremely proud of this young lady's accomplishments.

"Becky has worked very hard since the first day I met her," Martin said. " Her focused effort, combined with her innate musical expression, have brought her a long way so far, and I have the highest confidence that she will continue to do great things with her musical gifts in performance and composition."

At High Point, Turro is a member of the Women's Choir, Chamber Choir, Jazz Band, spring musicals, and was drum major of the Marching Band. She has also accompanied many events in the music and theatre department at High Point. In May, Turro will play a 15-piece program for a judge from the National Guild of Piano Teachers to earn a High School Diploma in Piano.

This hour-long audition will require Turro to play 10 pieces from the Classical repertoire, plus demonstrate mastery of scales, chords, cadences, arpeggios, improvisation, and modulation.

She also is planning for her senior recital on June 6 at 2:30 p.m. at High Point Regional High School.
