In celebration of Earth Day, and as a way to promote environmental stewardship, the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority and the Wallkill River Watershed Management Group hosted its 10th annual Earth Energy Day Celebration on Wednesday, April 22 at the Solid Waste Disposal & Recycling Facilities.

The SCMUA Earth Energy Day was organized around a central theme of raising environmental awareness, promoting renewable energy, and encouraging energy conservation.

More than 330 students from Sussex County schools, as well as dozens of local residents, attended the event and participated in activities that were designed to provide information and educational lessons about environmental issues such as proper solid waste disposal, recycling, watershed management, alternative energy, protection of natural resources, individual energy conservation practices.

The celebration included an interactive activity center consisting of eight stations of exhibitors and cooperative partners who all worked to deliver information and environmentally focused messages to the participants. A food drive also was conducted as part of the event, with non-perishable items collected for Harvest House Food Pantry in Sussex Borough.
