Gymnasts train year round with hopes of excelling at their competitions, and all that hard work culminates at the State Championship meet. While USAG’s Xcel league has been around for quite a while across the nation, in New Jersey, the league is only two years old. This year saw New Jersey’s first ever Xcel Championship meet, and each gymnast who placed now has the honor of holding the record for their events.

Giant Gymnastics of Sparta has 3 very good reasons to celebrate this year. Their names are Fiona Postas, Kate Sutphen and Cameron Volpe.

While all 18 gymnasts qualified and performed well, Postas, Sutphen and Volpe made history, taking the coveted first place team award for the bronze level. Even more impressive, Postas reigns as champion, taking first place in Vault, uneven bars and balance beam, second in floor and first-place all-around with a 38.275. Sutphen came in third with a 36.80, and Volpe was fourth with a 36.750.

The Silver and Gold teams didn’t come home empty handed this time, either. Sparta’s gymnasts earned the fourth-place Silver Team award, and fifth-place Gold Team awards. Placing in the top 5 for various events were: Katie Hlywa, Meagan Ward, Meghan Smith, Jadyn DePaolo, Ciara Peselli, Caroline Dietz, Emily Rodriguez, Reese Abrams, Dara DePaolo and Kelly Hurley.
