College inducts Veteran honor society

NEWTON — Service. Academics. Leadership. Unity. Tribute. Excellence.

These are the core values of Sussex County Community College’s SALUTE program, a National Honor Society for Veterans.

The first of its kind, SALUTE honors student veterans and military in two-and four-year institutions of higher education.

But not only does membership into the national honor society look to pay its thanks to the men and women who have served or are currently doing so, it also strives to better the academic success of the veterans.

The honor society includes the unique aspect of a four-tier system, which is designed to encourage student veterans to strive to improve their GPA and advance to a higher tier of excellence during their academic careers.

Sussex County Community College inducted its first SALUTE members in a special ceremony on campus on April 29.

Inductees included United States Marines Megan Crespo, Kyle Dichterenko, Matthew Harbst, Matthew Lunz, Ihor Manik, Justin Pabst, and William Vargas; Pennsylvania Army National Guardsman Michael Worley; as well as Rebekah Battersby and AJ Perrier of the United States Army.

The program also included a tribute to MIA Prisoners of War. The audience was welcomed by SCCC President and Air Force Veteran Dr. Paul Mazur. Presentations were given by current students, Frank Wallace and AJ Perrier, President and Vice President of SCCC’s Student Veteran’s Organization.

SCCC is a leader in working with veterans, current military students, and their families in offering several programs to assist them in advancing their educational careers.
