Jefferson Arts committee seeks choral director

| 22 May 2015 | 03:10

The Jefferson Arts Committee is seeking a choral director for the township Community Chorus.

This is a stipend position and will be available starting in the fall.

Potential candidates should be aware that the chorus presently rehearses 10 months out of the year from 7:30-9 p.m. on Tuesdays in the Music Room at the Jefferson Township Middle School.

If the school district is closed for any reason, rehearsals are canceled. Membership currently stands at 34 men and women.

Through the years, the chorus has sung traditional folk songs, Broadway show tunes, sacred music, ethnic tunes, popular songs, and classical music. The director would be responsible to plan, prepare, and present two choral concerts annually — in the spring (June) and during the Christmas holiday season (usually the first Sunday in December), a performance at the annual Jefferson Township Day celebration (July), and other special events by invitation.

A candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in the field of music, preferably vocal; and choral experience is preferred. If a candidate has experience as a choir/chorus director in a church or other private entity but does not have a BA, he/she is welcome to apply as well. The candidate must be able to patiently teach music to adults who are not professional musicians but very talented, willing to learn, and enthusiastic. The chorus’ accompanist is Janet Breckenridge, but if a candidate plays piano, that is an advantage and should be noted on the resume.

Interested parties should submit a letter of intent and a resume to The Jefferson Arts Committee, Chorus Director Position, P.O. Box 2604, Oak Ridge, NJ 07438 or this information can be submitted to artscommittee@jeffersonarts.org.
