Jefferson American Legion celebrates Memorial Day

Members of the American Legion Post 423, the Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Boy Scout Troop No. 49 observed Memorial Day at the American Legion Post on Legion Road, Oak Ridge..

The organizations gathered to pay tribute to the members of the armed forces who lost their lives during the past wars and the veterans who served.

Grave sites of veterans were decorated during the previous week with American flags. All told, more than 500 graves were decorated at 11 cemeteries in the area by members of the Post.

On Memorial Day, services were held at the Newfoundland Cemetery, St Thomas the Apostle Cemetery, Oak Ridge Cemetery and the Milton Cemetery.

At the American Legion Post 423 home, services were held remembering the sacrifices made by the Veterans who have died and those who still suffer the results of wounds received during the past wars.

Guest speakers for the service were Township Council President Richard Yocum and Lt. Col. Ingrid Parker, garrison commander from Picatinny Arsenal.
