The Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority held a flag retirement ceremony at Abbey Glen in Lafayette on Monday.

About 720 pounds of retired American Flags were collected from residents and businesses.

Derek and Kevin Cooke, the owners of Abbey Glen stated that they opened in 1982, this is the second year to hold the Retired American Flag Ceremony. They also are the only facility in the state licensed to perform retired flag cremation.

Some flags are made from natural fibers and some from synthetics, which are toxic to burn. Abbey Glen is allowed to burn one thousand pounds annually under their license. The ashes will be interred at the Veterans Cemetery in Lafayette.

William Hank, Chaplain for Post 213 started the services with a prayer. Brian Keenan of Andover, County Commander, also participated in the ceremony.
