New banners show town, college partnership

NEWTON — New banners hung from light posts on the main roadways near downtown Newton are focused on recognizing the community partnership between Sussex County Community College and the town.

The banners, which each read “Welcome to Newton, A College Town,” feature SCCC’s commitment to academic excellence, and its ongoing relationship with the town, located in the heart of the county.

With nearly 4,000 students, staff and visitors visiting the campus regularly, the banners are meant to welcome students, faculty, and alumni into the downtown area.

As the home to Sussex County Community College, the Town of Newton is a destination for thousands of residents and visitors every day.

The new banners will highlight Newton as the college town it became in 1983, when SCCC bought its campus on College Hill Road, which was the former home of Don Bosco Prep.

“We are very proud to be the host community of such a fine educational establishment – one that brings tremendous opportunities to students of all ages. We look forward to expanding our collaboration to include other projects in the future,” Newton Mayor E. Kevin Elvidge said.

Newton Town Manager Thomas S. Russo, Jr. and College President Dr. Paul Mazur look forward to continued collaborations and are delighted to celebrate this partnership by the raising of the College Town banners throughout the Town of Newton, according to a news release from the college.
