DEP to outline Heaters Pond options

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection will send a representative to the Monday, July 27, meeting Ogdensburg Council meeting to answer residents' questions regarding the work to be done at Heaters Pond.

Voters, in November, will decide whether to remove the Heater's Pond Dam or to armor it so the borough is in compliance with state code.

If the voters choose to armor the dam, Peter Olieman, senior vice president of Cherry, Weber & Associates, and Eugene Buczynski of Van Cleef Engineering Associates recommended Grouted Riprap, mortar between large stones.

Removing the dam would include taking away the spillway boards, concrete from the spillway, and part of the dam itself. The goal would be to open up and protect the rest of the spillway.

Mayor Steve Ciasullo said even if the dam was armored, DEP could return in the future with new requirements regarding the spillway.

"You never know when the regulations are going to change," Buczynski said. "it's not one-and-done."

Final numbers also will be available on Monday, July 27.
