    — The American Red Cross is hosting a meeting for high school students in the area interested in joining the Sussex County Red Cross Youth Council.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Red Cross office located at 93 Spring St. in Newton. Parents are also welcome to attend.

The Sussex County Youth Council is open to students in grades nine through twelve in Sussex and Warren counties. Each month the council completes a service project that helps fulfill the Red Cross mission in the community.

Youth and young adults are an important component of the Red Cross and make up over 20 percent of the Red Cross volunteer workforce. Youth and young adult volunteers can be actively involved in every line of Red Cross service delivery; they can lead Red Cross Clubs, teach community preparedness, donate blood and recruit other donors, raise funds in their local community, volunteer at veterans’ hospitals, and support international initiatives. Youth volunteers may also hold a leadership position on their chapter’s Board of Directors. Each of the North Jersey Region’s three boards have a seat designated for a youth volunteer member.

“Youth are vital to the future of the Red Cross,” said Michelle Esposito, regional director of volunteers, American Red Cross North Jersey Region. “The Sussex County Red Cross Youth Council is a great opportunity for high school students interested in giving back to their community.”

Elections for council member positions for the 2015-2016 school year, including president, vice president, secretary, and volunteer connection liaison, will be held during the meeting. Interested members, existing or new, will be asked to present a two-minute speech about their plans, goals and qualifications for the desired position.
