A full roster of Crystal Springs Golf Resort Members registered for the Fourth Member Appreciation Golf Tournament held at the Black Bear Golf Course in the hope of qualifying for the end of year Crystal Cup Championship scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the Ballyowen Golf Club.

However a highlight of the event occurred in the Putting Contest when Juan Goyzueta sank a 55-foot putt. Unfortunately Goyzueta had declared the putt to be a “practice” putt causing his holed out putt to remain uncounted in the contest. As a result of the disqualification of the Goyzueta putt Jack Demetrius was declared the Putting Contest winner with a putt came to rest just 2 ¼ inches from the hole.

The format of the event was a 2-golfer Team Shamble Better Ball competition with prizes awarded in 4 Divisions: Men’s low gross/low net; Senior low gross/low net; Women’s low net and Couples low net.

The men’s team of Ray Rafferty and Joe Smith carded a 6-under-par 66 to win top honors in the Men’s Gross Division.

Robert Fitting and Bret Trenkman were the Men’s Low Gross Division winners with a score of 6-under-par 66 with John Schneider and Bill Lonardi’s score of 9-under-par good enough to win the seniors Low Net Division with Bov Mosier and Ed Lemire winning the Senior Low Gross Division with a three-under-par 69.

The top performers in the Women’s Division were Lee Carrabba and Pat Zakur, who finished with a 8-under-par 64. The Couples Division team of Robert Wallerius and Donna Wallerius scored an 8-under-par to take the win in that division for the third time.

In the skill competitions, Don Hemberger won closest to the pin on hole No. 5 with a shot that landed 2’4” from the hole and Pat Zakur’s tee shot on hole No. 11 was 7’9” from the pin to take the closest to the pin win for the ladies. Long drive honors went to Tim Okrongy for the men and Joan Huffine for the ladies. Joe Gammarino took the long drive win for the seniors.
