MORRISTOWN, NJ - Born and raised in Beijing, violinist Dan Zhu was named “one of the emerging Chinese international artists today” by Gramophone magazine for good reason. He performs regularly in North America, Europe and Asia and will be coming to Morristown by way of a tour in South Africa. He will join the New Philharmonic of New Jersey in a performance of Prokofiev’s “Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor” on Sunday, Dec. 13 at the College of Saint Elizabeth. Since making his Carnegie Hall debut at the age of 18, Zhu has performed with a long list of world renowned orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra of China, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Munich Symphony, the Shanghai Symphony and the L’Orchestra National de Belgique. The foreign press has praised the young violinist. The Strad magazine called him “an artist of affecting humility and beautiful tone production” and Britain’s Evening Telegraph praised his “thoughtful playing and dazzling virtuosity.” “We hope that by featuring a dynamic young soloist like Dan Zhu,” said Music Director/Conductor Leon Hyman, “we can attract a young audience for this concert. It is a great experience to see and hear a remarkable young musician playing one of the classical repertoires great concertos.” For more than 30 years, the New Philharmonic of New Jersey has entertained audiences and earned a reputation for excellence through a variety of programs including concerts, music education programs and outreach programs for nursing and assisted living facilities. Under the leadership of Maestro Hyman, the New Philharmonic is popular for the high quality of its performances and the entertaining selections. The Dec. 13 concert also features Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 3” and Stravinsky’s “Eight Instrumental Miniatures.” The concert begins at 3 p.m. with a lecture preceding the program at 2 p.m. New Philharmonic concerts are held in the new Dolan Performance Hall located on the campus of the College of Saint Elizabeth just a couple miles east of Route 287 on Route 124 (Madison Ave.).
