NEWTON. The John M. Kuntz Athletic Hall of Fame Wall celebrates the legacy of the longtime athletic director.

Sussex County Community College (SCCC) has created the John M. Kuntz Athletic Hall of Fame Wall, celebrating the legacy of longtime athletic director John Kuntz.
Kuntz started as the men’s basketball coach in 1987, then added the baseball coaching job in 1988 before becoming the full-time athletic director. He retired in 2023.
Under his leadership, SCCC athletics expanded from one team to 12 competitive teams.
He also helped shape student activities, the Student Government Association and campus clubs.
In 2019, Kuntz was recognized as the Ron Case Athletic Director of the Year, an honor awarded to an athletic director in New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware for his or her dedication and contributions to college athletics.
“My tenure at SCCC has been truly remarkable,” he said at the Hall of Fame Wall dedication Feb. 18. “Watching the college transform and grow - not just in athletics, but in many areas - has been inspiring.
“I’ve been fortunate to work alongside dedicated coaches, staff and administrators, especially with the strong support of the college administration. This dedication is truly an honor.”
Interim SCCC president Cory Homer said, “John Kuntz’s impact on Sussex County Community College is immeasurable. His dedication, vision and commitment to our student-athletes have shaped the foundation of our athletics program.
“We honor his legacy by dedicating the new Athletic Hall of Fame in his name - a lasting tribute to his passion for sports, education and student success.”
The Hall of Fame Wall is in the Academic and Athletic Building on the Newton campus.
