Newton man convicted in fatal stabbing
HUNTERDON COUNTY. A jury found Brandon Petersen, 33, of Newton guilty of first-degree murder and other charges
Brandon Petersen, 33, of Newton was convicted of first-degree murder and other charges Friday, May 26, Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renee Robeson said.
He could be sentenced to serve from 30 years to life in state prison. Sentencing is scheduled July 14.
A jury also convicted Petersen of third-degree possession of an unlawful weapon, fourth-degree possession of an unlawful weapon and fourth-degree unlawful taking of a means of conveyance after a three-week trial before state Superior Court Judge Angela Borkowski.
He was acquitted of a charge of third-degree witness tampering.
Petersen was accused of stabbing Michelle Carkhuff, 38, on Dec. 6, 2020, at a home in Delaware Township. She later died of her injuries at a hospital.
Petersen fled before police arrived. He was arrested the next morning in Pennsylvania after a joint investigation by the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office and the Delaware Township Police Department.
He is being held in the Warren County Correctional Facility.
