The Pope John XXIII Regional High School mock trial team won the Sussex County competition Feb. 21 at the historic county courthouse in Newton.
The team was scheduled to face the Hudson County winner Feb. 28 in the regional finals in New Brunswick.
Six teams took part in the Sussex County contest, which was sponsored by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation.
The mock trial involved a criminal case loosely based on the Varsity Blues scandal in which parents were convicted of bribing college officials to admit their children.
The Pope John team beat High Point Regional High School in the semifinals, then took on Newton High School, the champion for the past five years.
