Woman charged with animal cruelty

A Virginia woman was charged with animal cruelty after New Jersey State Police found animals in an abandoned truck and dead animals in trash bags in the truck bed.
About 4:45 p.m. Monday, April 10, troopers responded to the parking lot of Marshalls department store on Hampton House Road in Hampton Township on an animal complaint.
They found a Chevy Silverado pickup truck containing 25 cats and dogs in the cab and more than 10 cats and dogs in three crates in the bed of the truck. Troopers also discovered several trash bags in the bed of the truck containing more than 30 dead cats and dogs.
A veterinarian responded to the scene to assess the animals, which were removed by 11th Hour Animal Rescue, Blairstown Animal Hospital, Newton Animal Hospital and Bark’s Animal Rescue.
The owner of the vehicle, Lynn Leonard, 53, of Bloxom, Va., was released with a pending court date.
The case remains under investigation, a State Police spokesman said.
