Group coordinates summer employment program

NEWTON — Project Self-Sufficiency announced the availability of a summer employment program for low-income youth, ages 16 to 24, for a six-week period beginning July 6. Applicants will be placed in a variety of local schools, government offices and non-profit organizations to work in landscaping, maintenance, clerical and customer service positions for approximately 25 hours per week. The program has limited spaces available, has income restrictions, and is specifically targeted towards youth who may have dropped out of high school, are deficient in basic literacy skills, are TANF recipients, and who may have been involved with DYFS or the criminal justice system. Applicants can also be homeless, pregnant or currently parenting, although childcare is not included in the program. The Summer Youth Employment Program is made possible through funding from the Morris-Sussex-Warren Workforce Investment Board.
