Senior earns art scholarship

Abby Mechanic, a Sparta High School senior and an art student of Jennie Traill Schaeffer at the TraillWorks studio in Newton, has been awarded the Dean Scholarship for academics and art at Maine College of Art in Portland for this fall. “I truly learned to draw and look at things differently,” said Mechanic about her weekly lessons. In her “Skull Self-Portrait,” created with graphite on paper, Mechanic drew her skull after studying the structure of the skeleton via various illustrations, along with observing and feeling her bone structure in a mirror. The drawings are done on both sides of one sheet of paper.
