Vernon - Students from the Cedar Mountain Primary School in Vernon have adopted the St. Martin East public school in Mississippi. The school, that serves children in grade K-3. was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Cedar Mountain students are sending “Lunch Bags Of Hope”. The bags contain personal care items, snacks, a small toy and handwritten letters and cards from Vernon students and their families. The Bags of Hope will be distributed to the children of St. Martin East by the school principal. Cedar Mountain faculty and staff are also trying to send some sunshine and hope to their colleagues in Mississippi. Each faculty member has made a rainbow pin, written letters of encouragement and has also made monetary donations. The monetary donations were used to purchase Wal-Mart gift cards to be distributed to faculty, staff and families in need. The gift cards were directly sent to the superintendent of Jackson County, Miss. Many of the families in this Mississippi community remain displaced. Cedar Mountain students and faculty initiated the project out of concern for those who have had their lives disrupted.
