Flu clinics canceled

SUSSEX COUNTY-Due to the shortage of flu vaccine, the Sussex County Division of Health, Public Health Nursing is canceling the following clinics: • Andover Senior Center n 4-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13. • Sussex County Homestead n 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Oct. 23. • Sussex County Homestead n 3:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9. • Sussex County Homestead n 3:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7. The nationwide shortfall of flu vaccine is having an immediate impact on Sussex County. Stephen Gruchacz, Administrator of Health and Human Serwill follow the guidance provided through the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, as well as the Centers for Disease Control. Gary Chiusano, Freeholder Liaison to the Division of Health said, "Given the current situation, it is necessary to prioritize the administration of flu vaccine based on those that are most susceptible. It is the right thing to do." Although individuals have already registered for the flu vaccine, County staff will be contacting them to determine if they fall into the high risk population. Anyone who is already registered should contact Sussex County Public Health Nursing at 973-948-5400. The CDC recommends that the high risk groups who are a priority for vaccination with the flu shot include: • All children ages 6-23 months • Adults age 65 and over • Individuals age 2-64 with underlying chronic medical conditions • All women who will be pregnant during influenza season • Residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities • Children 6 months-18 years of age who are on chronic aspirin therapy • Healthcare workers with direct patient care • Out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of children age 6 months and younger For more information, visit sussex.nj.us.
