Jeff High teen named school's scholar/athlete
Casey Fasano has been nominated by Jefferson Township High as its United Way Scholar/Athlete. Each of the 11 Sussex County Interscholastic League school announced its 2009 nominee recently at a n event held at Sussex County Community College. Casey replaces Jefferson Township’s first nominee, who had to bow out. The nominees will compete to win the top prize: a $2,500 college scholarship. A total of over $9,000 in scholarship money will be awarded to these students at a banquet to be held at Perona Farms in Andover on March 27. Between now and that date, the nominees will be naming two speeches in front of prominent area organizations. Casey is a senior at Jefferson Township High School where she ranks No. 18 out of 270 students and currently holds a grade point average of 4.44. She has been enrolled in 13 different honors and AP courses and through Seton Hall’s Project Acceleration Program, will graduate with four college credits thus far. She is also a member of the French Honor Society and since her junior year, the National Honor Society. She also been a member of Student Council since her sophomore year and is currently serving as co-president. Casey was named Artist of the Month in November and nominated for the JTHS Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholar Athlete Award. Casey has been a part of the JTHS Varsity Cheerleading Team for the past four years. Her team has traveled to many local competitions where they have took first and overall in almost all of them. The cheerleaders have also won Grand Champion at National Competitions in Washington, D.C., Orlando and Baltimore. They recently won the SCIL competition and received the spirit award. The team cheers at football games and home basketball games. Casey has been playing for the Varsity Girls Lacrosse team for the past two years. They recently held a record of 10-8 and made their first trip to states with their current coach. She also participates in a winter lacrosse league and the Farleigh Dickinson University Summer Lacrosse Camp. Casey also partakes in many activities within her school and community. She is a member of the Peer Development Program, Each One Reach One, Teens Against Dating Abuse, the Class of 2009 Fundraising and Prom Committee, Yearbook and Project Graduation. She has been a member of Girl Scouts for 12 years, during which she has earned her Bronze and Silver Award, and is currently completing her Gold Award. She has choreographed and coached for recreation cheerleading and has been involved in many church community events and volunteer work.
