New karate classes to begin in Jefferson

Oak Ridge. The Jefferson Township Karate Program is set to begin its 10-week fall session on Monday, Sept. 9.

    The Jefferson Township Recreation Department’s Karate Program will begin its 10-week fall session on Monday, Sept. 9, 2019, and continue through Monday, Nov. 18, 2019 (no class on Monday, Nov. 4). The program is open to school age children ages kindergarten and up as well as adults.

    This ongoing program has been running for 13 years through the Recreation Department with instructors from the Jersey Judo Karate Academy of Kenvil teaching the Isshinryu style of Karate. The skills learned help students develop coordination, balance, posture, and endurance. Students also gain self-confidence and discipline through progression in karate, while studying the authentic form of Asian Martial Arts. Jersey Judo Karate Academy is run by Sensei Rick Norris, a Kudan (9th degree black belt), and the Academy’s staff includes over 50 certified, fully trained black belts.

    Classes are held in the Community Lodge at Camp Jefferson on Weldon Road at 6:30 to 7:30 pm for grades K- 4th grade and 7:30 to 8:30 pm for grades 5 through adults. Registration is now on-line through Community Pass. The program fee is $55 per person with a discount of $5 per person for each additional sibling enrolled.

    Log onto www.communitypass.net, the community/organization is Jefferson Township, and if you already have a Community Pass account, enter your log in and password, choose the activity under the season "2010 Karate for Adults & Children", register and pay the class fee.

    Karate participants must be registered and the class fee paid in full before attending the first class on Sept. 9. A late registration fee will take effect as of Sept. 19.
