Sussex Christian plans Fall Festival

SUSSEX — Last year, the Sussex Christian School raised over $60,000 on a rainy October day to benefit its students, attracting an estimated 2,000 attendees.
This year, rain or shine, the festival is planned once again for Saturday, Oct. 1st at the Sussex County Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m.
This year’s organizers — Marlene Meyers and Kristy Lockburner, both alumni of the school — each have two children currently attending the SCS.
“Kristy is in charge of the auction and I am in in charge of the Snack Shack, but are blessed to have several different volunteer-led committees that cover specific events,” said Myers, transitioning into her sixth year coaching the SCS girls’ basketball team. “The festival runs on team work. Families of students help by donating baked goods which are sold at the Country Store, and each class puts together a basket for auction.”
Following the yearly tradition, admission/parking is free.
The festival normally features about 60 vendors.
“We send out around 400+ letters during the summer to community businesses and receive donations every year for the auction, which we are very grateful for,” said Lockburner, who has participated as an Auction Committee chairperson for over six years.
The “Sonrise Mountain Revival” Bluegrass Band will be in concert from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. The Snack Shack will be open from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. with food available for purchase.
According to Meyers, to be a craft vendor, the cost varies between $35 and $45 for a space depending on table location. The Chicken BBQ costs $14 for adults and $10 for kids. The tractor pull races require $5 entry fees per individual/hook.
“It’s a fun day for the entire family that gives our students the ability to shine in the community while raising funds to cover unexpected expenses that pop up throughout the year,” explains Lockburner. “We have something for everyone to enjoy.”
