Wallkill teen takes top FBLA honor
HAMBURG Evan Murphy was named the FBLA National Future Business Leader, the highest award in this student organization, during a multi-day national conference in San Antonio. He was also recognized as New Jerseys Whos Who in FBLA.
Evan and four other members of the Wallkill Valley Regional High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) took numerous awards at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in San Antonio, which they attended from June 27 through July 3.
The five: Tom Darragh, Marissa DeOliveira, Evan Murphy, Chirag Patel and John Sheldon were joined by an FBLA group from Jackson Memorial High School, consisting of Lindsay Casella, Jamie Casella and Samantha Shea. They were accompanied by Carol Jurkouich, FBLA adviser.
More than 8,000 members and advisers attended the conference from across the country, Canada, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Europe.

The Wallkill Valley chapter received the Hollis and Kitty Guy Gold Seal Award of Merit in recognition and appreciation of the chapters active participation in programs and projects advancing the goals of FBLA-PBL.
The students took part in workshops designed to develop their leadership skills and in competitions. Tom Darragh placed eighth in Help Desk; the Partnership team of Tom Darragh, Marissa DeOliveira and Evan Murphy placed ninth; the Local Chapter Annual Business Report received fifth place honors.
Additionally, Wallkill Valley placed first in the nation for the school that raised the most money for the March of Dimes. Members hosted Super Night 2011 last November and raised $20,039. Because of these efforts, the chapter received a $1,000 Mission Lift March of Dimes grant, which will be used for Super Night.
Students were also able to take in some sightseeing, including the Natural Bridge Caverns, the Alamo and historic Riverwalk.
