Wallkill Valley FBLA members visit Chicago
HAMBURG — Ten members of the Wallkill Valley Regional High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America attended the 2015 FBLA National Leadership Conference in Chicago, Ill., from June 27-July 3.
Those members were Laura David, Carly DeOliveira, Nicole Fadel, Merinda Gruszecki, Kyle McKenna, Vincent Moncelsi, Scott Mueller, Mikayla Savastano, Ana Schroeder, and Amanda Spindler. Alexis Casella, Jamie Casella, and Amit Mysore, FBLA members from Jackson Memorial High School FBLA, joined the Wallkill Valley contingency. They were accompanied by Carol Jurkouich, FBLA adviser.
Members participated in various motivational general sessions and workshops in order to develop their leadership skills.
DeOliveira received first place for Who’s Who in FBLA. She represented New Jersey in the State Parade of Who’s Who students at the National Conference Opening Session. This award honors FBLA members who have made outstanding contributions to the Association at the local, state, and national levels.
The Wallkill Valley chapter received the 2015 Hollis and Kitty Guy Gold Seal Award of Merit in recognition and appreciation of the chapter’s active participation in programs and projects advancing the goals of FBLA-PBL. The chapter also was recognized for second place as the Largest Eastern Region Local Chapter in the Professional Division. Additionally, Wallkill Valley FBLA placed first in the nation for the school that raised the most money for the March of Dimes. Members hosted Super Night 2014 last November and raised $20,575. Because of these efforts, the chapter received a $1,000 Mission LIFT March of Dimes Grant, which will be used for Super Night 2015.
Students also were able to take in some sightseeing, including a Lake Michigan riverboat cruise with fireworks; shops, museums, and places of interest along the Magnificent Mile; a tour of the Willis Tower; and the Navy Pier. They also attended the New Jersey FBLA state dinner at Dave & Buster’s. Over 11,000 members and advisers attended the conference from across the country, Canada, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, China, and Europe.
