Pizzeria served with clean-up bill

SUSSEX n Sussex Borough has identified Lorenzo’s Pizzeria & Restaurant as the source of a grease clog that jammed one of its sewer lines last month. On March 14, borough officials had to hire Vernon-based Earth Care to address a sewer system back-up that clogged a section of pipe on Route 23 near Henderson’s Service Station. Over the course of the ensuing week, Earth Care returned twice to unclog the grease jam that traveled farther down the pipe before service technicians finally removed the glob on March 19. To determine the source of the clog, Earth Care placed cameras along the sewer connections for three area restaurants to determine whether one of them might be the source of the grease discharge. At the April 7 Sussex Borough Council meeting, Sussex Borough Attorney John Ursin identified the culprit as Lorenzo’s Pizzeria. He said that the borough forwarded the bills it had accumulated for the sewer system work to Lorenzo’s. Sussex Borough Clerk Catherine Gleason placed the total amount of the invoices presented to Lorenzo’s at $3,110.04. In a phone call placed by The Advertiser-News to the restaurant, a man who identified himself as the owner of Lorenzo’s but who declined to reveal his name said he had received the invoices from the borough but had not yet submitted them to his insurance carrier. He declined to comment on whether he expected the insurance carrier to reimburse his business to cover the costs of the sewer repairs. Policy had been for the County Board of Health to do yearly inspection of restaurant grease traps; now the borough will also have its Quality of Life officer inspect monthly.
