Two arrested after attempted break-in

Vernon — Vernon Police report there have been a “string” of burglaries of unlocked motor vehicles. In an incident Monday morning, police were called to stop an assault in progress, as someone tried to break into an unlocked car and fought with the owner and another person, according to a recent report. On March 9, at 7:35 a.m. police received a tip from an unidentified caller that a male was breaking into a vehicle on Eagles Nest Drive at the Great Gorge condos and fighting with the victims. Shannon Stone, 27, of Vernon, had been confronted by a female adult as he was illegally entering the vehicle owned by the male victim, according to the police report. Stone assaulted the female, who began yelling for help, and then he got into a “physical confrontation” with the male, who owned the unlocked car. Stone then tried to get away as a passenger in a car driven by Nicholas A. Scalci, 18, of Vernon. Patrolmen William Gebhard and John Boenitz arrived at the scene quickly enough to stop the two and arrest them. A brief struggle ensued, police say, as Stone resisted arrest, but he was quickly subdued by Patrolman Gebhard. Investigation by the police found that both Stone and Scalici were in possession of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia. Stone was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, of drug paraphernalia, two counts of simple assault, burglary and resisting arrest and lodged in the Sussex County jail for default of bail, which was set at $30,000 with no 10 percent option. Scalici was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released after being served with the complaints.
