First, I am Gun owner - only 1 - and use it not to hunt, but for target practice in another state. I have a home in the county, but I teach in three states at colleges. In any event, I have been following Assembly leaders from the 24th District, leading some ridiculous attack on Red Flag Laws. I am sure many readers have heard of Red Flag Laws. What are Red Flag Laws? Essentially, in the United States, a Red flag law is a gun control law that permits police or family members to petition a state court to order the temporary taking away of weapons from someone showing a risk to himself, herself or to others. Without any doubt, strong majorities of Americans across the political spectrum support these laws, which allow guns to be taken away for an assumed temporary time. For this process, a judge is petitioned by a family or the police to take those guns away. These laws, often called extreme risk protection laws, or Red Flag laws have received attention after 31 people were killed in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, and a High School in Florida. Variations of these laws are found in great swaths of the United States. Florida's Red Flag Laws have been used 3,500 times, since Parkland. Can you imagine why? We should also look at a school in Connecticut where young students were killed. Let us stop the nonsense Assemblymen and foolhardy mayors and councils. It is time to stop grandstanding, and get something important like jobs, infrastructure not from 1910, and match your Democratic and Republican members around the state! You think?
