My name is April Kunz Oleksy and I have been a school crossing guard at Franklin Elementary School in Franklin for the past 14 years.
I started off as a substitute guard back in March of 2007 and my first assignment was Immaculate Conception Church where I stayed for many years until the school closed. Then I eventually made my way to Rutherford & High Street where I have been for the past 6 or so years. I have recently retired and would like to send out a Thank-you to all the students, parents, faculty & passer byers that I have seen over the past 14 years. The school bus drivers and parents always had a hand to wave or a horn to honk to say “hi” as they were passing me by, they probably have no idea how much I looked forward to seeing them every day, so thanks to everyone who took the time to acknowledge me, I see you! It’s been an honor and a privilege, I have received so much love and kindness throughout the years it will stay with me forever. The kids that passed me every day were amazing, kind, funny and generous. I have lost count of the many gifts, flowers, thank you cards, amazing art work, hot chocolates, cookies and hugs that I have received over the years. The artwork and cards had me in tears as the kids were always so extra kind and full of love. Knowing that I made a difference in their lives for such a short time seeing them every day has become my superpower and it enhanced my life. I was known for my fun hats, back in the day giving out candy when I could then changing it up with the times and handing out pencils. Thanks again to everyone who has made my life better by just being there! I will never forget your kindness and the smiles of all the faces I helped safely cross the road during my time as a school crossing guard. Thank you for all your generosity and making my life better because you were in it.
Don’t forget to look both ways when you cross the street, and keep spreading your kindness to those around you.
Peace Out,
April Kunz Oleksy
Your friendly neighborhood retired crossing guard.
